A sunny Sunday in September saw the culmination of the Brightwell Tennis Club Championships with a Finals Day filled with some fantastic tennis. A large crowd enjoyed a BBQ and tea and cakes while watching some intriguing matches.
Both singles finals were straightforward with an exhibition of some high-class tennis, Phil Cottington taking the men’s title defeating Dan Gray 6-0, 6-0 and Helen Clements defeating Vic Brown 6-0, 6-1. The doubles matches were absorbing clashes. Phil Cottington and Helen Clements joined forces to defeat last year’s winners Jackie West and Ben Wiltshire and win the Mixed Doubles 6-3, 7-6. The Ladies’ Doubles went to three sets with holders Cat McKeracher and Caroline Weaver successful defending their title, beating Jackie West and Vic Brown 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. The Men’s Doubles was won by Josh Bence and Jamie Thomas who overcame Phil Cottington and Dan Gray 6-4, 6-1.
There were also closely-fought Plate matches taking place throughout the day. Harry Asprey beat Paul Mackie 7-5, 6-3 in the Men’s Singles. Paul Mackie then played the Mixed with Judy Sauter, defeating Lynne Lassiter and Angus Murray 6-2, 3-6, 11-9 in a very tight match, before teaming up with his son Oliver to win the Men’s Doubles with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Sean Summers and Marcus Johnson. Judy Sauter and Lily Wayling beat Katie Feather and Katie Newman 6-0, 7-5 in the Ladies’ Doubles Plate.
The day also saw the finals of the Farnham Town Junior Tournament. Oliver Mackie retained this Boys U17 title, defeating Sean Summers 7-5, 6-3 in a tight match. The U14 boys was also a close affair with Jack Cartwright beating last winners Ben Ellerington 6-3, 4-6, 10-8. Ben Ellerington then teamed up with Caleb Walker to defeat Jack Cartwright and Jamie Stoner 6-2, 6-1 in the doubles. In the U14 Plate Singles Jamie Stoner beat Tom Ward 6-4,6-4. The U11 Girls’ Final was won by Isabella Norman who defeated Lily Thorley 6-2 and in the boys’ event the winner was Oliver Anderson, the runner up Sam Bonser and third place Jude Hinchliffe. The Under 9s event, which was played previously, was won by Alex Thorley with Gregory McGibney runner up, Jemima Carver third and Joshua Horsnall fourth.
