As Brightwell Tennis Club approaches its century, a new chapter opened with debut winners in both the men’s and ladies’ singles.

With a rivalry to match Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, James Chamberlin and Luca Cimino did battle for the third year running in the men’s singles. It was a tight match with high quality tennis, but this time nineteen-year-old Luca ran out the winner 7-6, 6-4.

In the ladies’ singles twelve-year-old Olivia Midworth, who is ranked number four in Surrey, defeated Sally Strutton 6-0, 6-1. Sally put up a good fight and there were lots of rallies, but Olivia managed to hit the lines time and again to become the club’s youngest ever senior champion.

The ladies’ doubles managed to get their match in before the rain. Another excellent game saw a first win for the pairing of Jackie West and Becca Pheasey, who overcame holders Cat McKeracher and Caroline Weaver 6-3, 6-1.

In a shortened men’s singles plate, Ed Hinchliff defeated Stavros Kotsireas.

Three junior events went ahead. Jude Hinchliff retained the Boys’ U17 singles with a strong display. Second was Alex Petronio and third Aiden Brooker. In the U11 singles, Edmund Newton retained his title for the third year running with Alfie Midworth runner up. The U9 orange ball was won by Adrien Gourmelen after a close three set final against William Midworth.

The U11 girls, U14 boys and girls, men’s and mixed doubles will be played next Sunday.
