An incredibly warm September Sunday saw the culmination of the Brightwell Tennis Club Championships with a Finals Day filled with some fantastic tennis. A large crowd enjoyed a BBQ and tea and cakes while watching some intriguing matches.
In the Men’s Singles, Nick Fielding battled back from a set down to defeat Ben Wiltshire 4-6, 7-6, 10-3. The Ladies Singles saw two of the strongest ladies in the area, Cat McKeracher and Jackie West, play each other for the first time. They produced some high-quality tennis with McKeracher winning 6-4, 6-4. They were on different sides of the net in both the Ladies and Mixed Doubles with McKeracher partnering Caroline Weaver to successfully defend their ladies title and defeat West and Vic Brown 6-7, 6-1, 10-7 in a very tight match. West teamed up with Ben Wiltshire to win the mixed doubles and beat McKeracher and Jamie Kirk 6-2, 6-1. The Men’s Doubles was a walk over for Wiltshire and Fielding over Aleks and Pami Aleksandrov.
The day also saw 30 juniors presented with their match play medals and the finals of the Farnham Town Junior Tournament. The U17 Boys Singles saw a first-time winner as Jamie Stoner defeated Ben Ellerington 6-2, 6-4. Ellerington was successful in the U14 final where he beat Finley West 6-1, 6-2 and also in the doubles which he won with Caleb Walker. The doubles runners up were Stoner and Jack Cartwright and third place was West and Luca Cimino. The girl’s tournament was a round robin event won by Isabella Norman; Lily Thorley was second and Matilda Carver third.
There were ‘Plate’ events played at the same time and in the Men’s Singles junior champion Jamie Stoner defeated Kunal Kohli 2-6, 6-1, 10-3 in a match that went one way and then the other. The Men’s Doubles was a typically long and close match with rally kings Richard Apthorp and Paul Adlam defeating father and son duo Paul and Oliver Mackie 6-2, 2-6, 10-8. The Ladies doubles was won by April Barrass-Carratu and Bobbie Cimino who defeated Katie Newman and Izzy Else 6-1, 6-0. The Boys U17 plate was a very long match with lots of rallies and Nye Johnson eventually overcame Tom Ward 6-7, 6-4, 10-8.
